Parts of the hair

Shaft- the superficial portion, most of which projects above the surface of the skin

Root- the portion below the surface that penetrates into the dermis and into the subcutaneous layer

Hair Follicle- surrounds the root

Arrector Pili Muscle- on the side of the hair follicle and it contracts under stresses of fright and cold, pulling hairs into a verticle position

Glands

Sebaceous Gland- connected to hair follicles. the secreting portions of the glands lie in the dermis and open into the necks of the hair follicles or directly on the skin, the secrete sebum which keeps hair from drying out. It prevents excessive evaporation of water from the skin, keeps the skin soft, and inhibits the growth of certain bacteria.

Sudoriferous Gland- sweat glands that are divided into two types; the apocrine glands are found in the skin of the armpit; the eccrine glands are distributed throughout the skin, they are most numerous throughout the palms and soles of the feet, they produce a more watery secretion than that of the apocrine gland.

Ceruminous Gland- found in the outer ear canal, they create cerumen which provides a sticky barrier against foreign bodies
